Football Recap: Calallen's Rushing Dominance Continues

Calallen had to skate by with only a three-point margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 24-point drubbing they dealt Zapata on Friday. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Hawks with a sharp 27-3 victory. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Hawks recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.

Calallen's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Connor Klostermann, who rushed for 28 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 70 yards and one TD on only six passes. Another back making a difference was Jimmy Tipton, who rushed for 118 yards on only 15 carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Calallen was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 261 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 153 rushing yards in 16 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Despite the defeat, Zapata had strong showings from Jay Solis, who gained 205 total yards, and Ryan Solis, who rushed for 62 yards on only seven carries.

Calallen's victory bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Zapata, with the loss, they broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 6-2.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Calallen is set to challenge their familiar foe Hidalgo Early College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Ricardo Rodrguez and Roberto Gallegos. Meanwhile, Zapata will take on rival Valley View at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
