Los Lunas is 9-1 against Albuquerque since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Tigers will head out on the road to take on the Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Los Lunas is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Rio Grande, who was ranked 16th at the time (Los Lunas was ranked 11th). The Tigers came out on top in a nail-biter against the Ravens on Tuesday, sneaking past 4-3. Winning may never get old, but the Tigers sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Allen Galaviz and Mark Scime did most of the damage at the plate: Galaviz scored a run while going 1-for-2, while Scime scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs Scime has posted since back in May of 2024.
Meanwhile, it may have taken ten innings to finish the job, but Albuquerque ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They skirted past West Mesa 6-5. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Jude Williams looked comfortable as he tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Maximo Granados was excellent, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and one double. He has become a key player for Albuquerque: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least three hits, but 3-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Abran Vigil, who scored three runs while going 2-for-5.
Albuquerque kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 13.6.
Los Lunas pushed their record up to 11-7 with the win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Albuquerque, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 5-14 record.
Los Lunas was able to grind out a solid victory over Albuquerque in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, winning 4-1. Will the Tigers repeat their success, or do the Bulldogs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
