Baseball Game Preview: St. Edward Green Wave vs. Illinois Lutheran Chargers

St. Edward is on a 14-game streak of home losses dating back to last season, and Illinois Lutheran a six-game streak of away losses also dating back to last season. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Monday. The St. Edward Green Wave will be playing at home against the Illinois Lutheran Chargers at 4:30 p.m. St. Edward will be strutting in after a win while Illinois Lutheran will be coming in after a loss.

Having struggled with nine defeats in a row, St. Edward turned things around against Elgin on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out the Maroons 9-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Green Wave have posted since April 29th.

St. Edward got a great performance from Luis Vargas as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave Vargas a new career-high in strikeouts (four).

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brayden Collins-Langfield, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Anthony Leadley was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Illinois Lutheran couldn't beat Gardner-South Wilmington on Thursday even though they stacked five runs on them in the fifth inning. The Chargers came up short against the Panthers, falling 15-5.

Zach Zagone was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. That run marked the first that he has scored this season.

St. Edward's win bumped their record up to 2-26. As for Illinois Lutheran, their loss dropped their record down to 0-7.
