Baseball Recap: Cottondale Has No Trouble Against Vernon

Cottondale got themselves on the board against Vernon on Tuesday, but Vernon never followed suit. They put the hurt on the Yellowjackets with a sharp 9-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Hornets, who have now won seven games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Lane Johnson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (zero). He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. Cottondale is undefeated when Johnson posts two or more runs, but 4-8 otherwise.

In other batting news, Conner Barton was a standout: he scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4. Another player making a difference was Alex Bellamy, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-5.

Cottondale kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Vernon only managed one hit.

Cottondale now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Vernon, they moved to 5-12 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, Cottondale will be playing at home against Holmes County at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Holmes County's pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so Cottondale's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Vernon, they will head out on the road to take on Graceville at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Graceville has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.67 runs per game on average), something Vernon will no doubt try to take advantage of.
