Baseball Recap: Newtown Comes Up Short

Newtown had lost four straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 3-5 to make it five. They lost 10-1 to the Joel Barlow Falcons. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Nighthawks of the 7-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for Joel Barlow, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-1. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won six matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.

For Joel Barlow's part, Will Gregor made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over six innings pitched. Gregor has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Joel Barlow let TJ Baer and Billy Bardani run wild. Baer went 3-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Bardani went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those three RBI gave Bardani a new career-high. Connor Thomas was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Coming up, Newtown will challenge New Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Joel Barlow, they will be playing at home against Stratford at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The Red Devils have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.63 runs per game on average), something the Falcons will no doubt try to take advantage of.
