Basketball Recap: East St. Louis Triumphs

On Monday, in a tight match that could have gone either way, the East St. Louis Flyers made off with a 54-53 victory over the Springfield Senators.

East St. Louis' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alex Johnson, who went 6 of 12 on his way to 17 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. The contest was Johnson's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lawson Bynum, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds.

East St. Louis' win bumped their record up to 6-7. As for Springfield, they now have a losing record at 5-6.

East St. Louis and Springfield could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. East St. Louis (ranked 208th) will meet Southwind (ranked 27th) at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Similarly, Springfield (ranked 129th) will meet Hersey (ranked 27th) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
