Softball Recap: Deer River Comes Up Short

Deer River extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to nine on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 0-4 in the process. They lost 18-4 to the Ely Timberwolves. On the bright side, the four- run performance marked the Warriors' highest-scoring matchup to date.

As for Ely, the victory (which was their sixth in a row dating back to last season) raised their record to 2-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.7 runs on average over those games.

For Ely's part, Maija Mattson and Amelia Penke did most of the damage at the plate: Mattson got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI, while Penke got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. Annika Eastham was another key player, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Deer River will square off against Blackduck at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Ely, they will face off against Chisholm at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
