Basketball Recap: Favion Kirkwood's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Johnson over Calvary Day

Johnson lost against Calvary Day back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Johnson Atomsmashers fell 59-48 to the Calvary Day Cavaliers. While losing is never fun, the Atomsmashers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 296th, while the Cavaliers are ranked 80th).

Johnson lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Favion Kirkwood, who went 7 of 17 on his way to 16 points in addition to five assists and five boards. The matchup was Kirkwood's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Quentin James was another key player, putting up 11 points and five assists.

Johnson has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-14 record this season. As for Calvary Day, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Johnson will face off against Islands at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Johnson is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.5 points per game this season. As for Calvary Day, they will square off against Jenkins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
