Panthers went 9-1 against a challenging national schedule.

The high school football season in Maryland came to a close over the weekend with 10 state and conference champions crowned. As an independent, St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) didn't participate in any of those contests but after going 9-1 against a challenging national schedule, the Panthers earn the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.

Led by MaxPreps Maryland Player of the Year Da'Shawn Womack, St. Frances Academy beat three teams that won titles in other states and two others that are still alive in the Florida and Texas state playoffs.

Late in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Capital Division championship game, St. John's (Washington, D.C.) senior wide receiver Asa Gregg scored to help the Cadets beat DeMatha (Hyattsville) 7-3 and capture their 13th title.

Malik Washington fell just short of throwing for 3,000 yards as he led Archbishop Spalding (Severn) to an 11-1 record and the MIAA Class A state championship. The sophomore threw for 2,979 yards and 29 touchdowns as the Cavaliers finish No. 5.

No. 6 Quince Orchard (Gaithersburg), No. 18 Dunbar (Baltimore) and No. 14 Fort Hill (Cumberland) all defended state titles they won in 2021. Quince Orchard and Dunbar have won 28 and 26 games in a row, respectively.

Other champions that concluded their seasons ranked in the MaxPreps Top 25 include No. 10 Damascus, No. 11 St. Mary's (Annapolis), No. 13 North Point (Waldorf), No. 15 Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.) and No. 16 Milford Mill Academy (Baltimore).
