The Basic Wolves will head out to face off against the Coronado Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
Basic is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nevada's top teams: Centennial, who was ranked first at the time (Basic was ranked fifth). The Wolves fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. The Wolves' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Basic wouldn't go down easily and took Centennial into a fifth set but they suffered a heartbreaking eight-point loss. The match finished with set scores of 21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 15-7.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Coronado challenged Palo Verde on Tuesday. The Cougars took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Panthers.
While Coronado ultimately came up short, they didn't go down without a fight: they scored at least 18 points in every set they played. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 25-22.
Basic's defeat dropped their record down to 19-8. As for Coronado, their loss dropped their record down to 10-12.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's match: Basic has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 4.6 aces per game. However, it's not like Coronado struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.4 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Basic couldn't quite get it done against Coronado in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 as they fell 2-0. Can the Wolves avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
