Baseball Recap: Beech Grove Hornets vs. Covenant Christian Warriors
Beech Grove extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 4-14 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Covenant Christian Warriors. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Warriors this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-4 on Tuesday.
Beech Grove saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aiden Brown, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
As for Covenant Christian, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-6. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games.
On Covenant Christian's side, Gabe Unger and Henry Boyce were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Unger tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Boyce tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. At the plate, Unger went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one triple, while Boyce went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run. Those three RBI gave Unger a new career-high.
In other batting news, Blake Cope was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. Colin Ferkinhoff also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Looking ahead, Beech Grove will challenge Speedway at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Covenant Christian, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Heritage Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
