Basketball Recap: Academy of the Holy Names Falls Despite Big Games from Jaye Coleman and Gabriella Teixeira

After flying high against Braden River on Monday, Academy of the Holy Names came back down to earth. The Jaguars took a 53-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sunlake Seahawks on Tuesday. If the Jaguars were looking for revenge after losing 42-36 to the Seahawks when the teams met back in November of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Academy of the Holy Names' loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Gabriella Teixeira, who shot 40% from the field to rack up 24 points and seven rebounds, and Jaye Coleman, who posted eight points and seven boards.

Leading Sunlake to victory were Cherity Powells and Jessi Saffold. Powells went 6-for-11 on her way to 20 points and four steals, while Saffold dropped a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Powells is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 19 games she's played dating back to last season. Ava Micikas was another key player, putting up four points and seven boards.

Having lost for the first time this season, Academy of the Holy Names fell to 3-1. As for Sunlake, their win was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-1.

Academy of the Holy Names has already played their next game, a 52-28 victory against East Bay on the 3rd. As for Sunlake, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 66-39 win against Wiregrass Ranch on the 1st.
