Preview: Oxford Wolverines vs. Torrington Raiders

Oxford has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will take on The Torrington Raiders at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Oxford will be strutting in after a victory while Torrington will be coming in after a defeat.

Last Friday, Oxford had just enough and edged Crosby out 23-20.

Matthew Mcguire was the offensive standout of the contest as he rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries, and also picked up 62 receiving yards. Mcguire was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 64 yards.

Oxford's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB five times. Leading the way was Brando Fletter and his two sacks.

Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 42-6, which was the final score in Torrington's tilt against Naugatuck on Friday. While losing is never fun, Torrington can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut football rankings (they are ranked 92nd, while Naugatuck is ranked 21st).

Oxford's win was their sixth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 7-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-7 Wilby and 1-6 St. Paul Catholic (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 28.8% over those games). As for Torrington, their loss dropped their record down to 4-3.

Oxford was dealt a bruising 34-7 defeat at the hands of Torrington in their previous meeting back in October of 2015. Can Oxford avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
