Softball Preview: Cherokee Chiefs vs. Volunteer Falcons
Cherokee is 0-10 against Volunteer since April of 2021 but things could change on Tuesday. The Chiefs will look to defend their home field against the Falcons at 5:30 p.m.
Thursday just wasn't the day for Cherokee's offense. They took a 3-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of Grainger on Thursday. That's two games in a row now that the Chiefs have lost by exactly three runs.
Meanwhile, Volunteer waltzed into their game on Saturday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 10-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won eight contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Volunteer got a great performance from Rylee Smith as she tossed five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. The dominant performance also gave Smith a new career-high in strikeouts (five).
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sydney New, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Danni Guinn, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Volunteer's win bumped their record up to 10-8. As for Cherokee, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-12.
