Baseball Recap: Bowman Academy Takes a Loss

Bowman Academy extended their losing streak to five on Friday, dropping their season record down to 1-6 in the process. They came up short against the Hammond Central Wolves, falling 20-1. The Eagles were not able to make up for their loss to the Wolves from their previous meeting back in April of 2023.

As for Hammond Central, the victory snapped their losing streak at five games and leaves them with a 7-8-1 record. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by seven runs or more this season.

For Hammond Central's part, Julian Santiago was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over five innings pitched. Santiago has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Hammond Central's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-8-1 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Juan Magallanes was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted over his last 12 games. Another player making a difference was Christopher Buckley, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Bowman Academy will square off against Gary West Side at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Hammond Central, they will face off against Hebron at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
