Football Game Preview: South Side Rams vs. Northgate Flames

South Side is a perfect 3-0 against Northgate since September of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Rams will be playing in front of their home fans against the Flames at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (South Side has four straight victories, Northgate has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

If Northgate heads into halftime all tied up, they better play a good second half: that's when South Side took over last week. The Rams enjoyed a cozy 21-6 win over Monessen on Friday.

It was another big night for Andrew Corfield, who rushed for 108 yards and two TDs. His rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 108 rushing yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: South Side was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 251 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 181 rushing yards in nine consecutive contests dating back to last season.

South Side didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Amare Moman and Eli Buchanon.

Meanwhile, Northgate fell victim to Laurel and their airtight defense on Friday. They had to suffer through a 50-0 loss at the hands of the Spartans. While losing is never fun, the Flames can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 490th, while the Spartans are ranked 162nd).

South Side's victory bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Northgate, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.

South Side won a game that couldn't have been any closer when the teams last played back in October of 2024, slipping by Northgate 36-35. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Flames' Sonteon Layne, who rushed for 59 yards and three scores, and also threw for 204 yards and one touchdown on only 15 passes.
