The Charlotte Catholic Cougars are taking a road trip to challenge the Christ School Greenies at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Charlotte Catholic is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last 11 games.
If Charlotte Catholic beats Christ School with 13 runs on Saturday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two contests with that exact score. The Cougars never let East Mecklenburg get on the board and left with a 13-0 win on Thursday. Considering the Cougars have won 13 games by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Ben Bordeaux and Henry Earl dominated on the mound. Bordeaux tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits, while Earl pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Bordeaux has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Matt McKnight was a standout: he scored two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Jon Fijalkowski, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Christ School got the win against Asheville Christian Academy on Wednesday by a conclusive 20-0. With that victory, the Greenies brought their scoring average up to 6.9 runs per game.
Garin Gosnell was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. He also allowed no hits, which is notable because Christ School is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 3-9-1 otherwise. Gosnell was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Corbin Spillards was incredible, firing off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while going 2-for-2. Those two home runs gave him a new career-high. Will Ray was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Christ School always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .579. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Charlotte Catholic pushed their record up to 17-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.4 runs over those games. As for Christ School, their record now sits at 5-10-1.
Saturday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Charlotte Catholic has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .501. However, it's not like Christ School struggles in that department as they've averaged .438. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Charlotte Catholic beat Christ School 4-1 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
