Softball Recap: Antigo Has No Trouble Against Wittenberg-Birnamwood

Antigo had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the seven-run drubbing they dealt Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Saturday. The Red Robins blew past the Chargers 15-8. Considering the Red Robins have won six games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Bethany Lewis made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and three unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, Antigo let Breleigh Akright and Sydnie Heinzen run wild. Akright went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Heinzen went 2-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Akright a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jewel Wiex, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run.

Antigo hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in four consecutive matches.

Antigo is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Wittenberg-Birnamwood, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-7.

Coincidentally, Antigo and Wittenberg-Birnamwood will both be playing Auburndale the next time they take the field. The Chargers will host the Apaches at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, while the Red Robins will play them later in the day, at 2:00 p.m.
