Mililani, Mid-Pacific Institute begin season as the favorites.

2016 Hawaii Preseason Baseball Fab 5, presented by the Army National Guard
1. Mililani
Head coach:
Mark Hirayama
2014-15 record: 14-5

The Trojans reached the semifinals of the Division I playoffs before falling to Mid-Pacific Institute. Mililani returns two of the state's top players in all-state pick Ryan Kono (DH) and Kaimana Souza- Paaluhi (OF). Kono batted .327 last year while Souza-Paaluhi batted .288. The Trojans also return all-state honorable mention picks Koa Eastlack (P) and CJ Ibara (3B).

2. Mid-Pacific Institute (Honolulu)
Head coach:
Jon Narimatsu
2014-15 record: 14-4



The Owls reached the Division I championship game, but fell to Campbell to finish as the state runner-up. A perennial contender, Mid-Pacific has several returning all-state players, including first team second baseman Jacob Maekawa and second team pitcher Chase Wago. Maekawa batted .379 while Wago had a 3-1 record with 24 strikeouts. Honorable mention all-state pick Alexander Oley also returns in the infield.

3. Kailua
Head coach:
Jeff Hooker
2014-15 record: 12-5

The Surfriders won the Oahu East championship, but lost in the first round of the Division I playoffs. Nevertheless, Kailua returns four players who earned all-state honors last year. Shortstop Dustin Imanaka made the second team after batting .392. Those earning honorable mention all-state included catcher Dalton Kalama (.380), first baseman Noah Auld (.324) and outfielder Kalei Kealoha-Machado (.514).

4. Moanalua (Honolulu)
Head coach:
Jeffrey Fujimoto
2014-15 record: 11-8



The Menehunes advanced to the second round of the Division I playoffs before falling to eventual champion Campbell. Moanalua features one of the state's top sophomores in outfielder Andrew Oasay, who earned all-state honorable mention honors as a freshman after batting .275 with five doubles. Moanalua also returns all-state honorable mention pitcher Tanner Inouye, who went 3-2 last year.

5. Kaiser (Honolulu)
Head coach:
James Olson
2014-15 record: 9-8

After a strong start last year, Kaiser faded down the stretch to finish 9-8 overall. The Cougars return a pair of all-state honorable mention selections in catcher Emmett Covello and utility player Kamalu Simeona. Covello batted .325 with a pair of home runs while Simeona batted .273.
