High school girls basketball rankings: Sierra Canyon remains No. 1 in MaxPreps Top 25 with postseason on the horizon

Alabama showdown going down Tuesday between No. 13 Hazel Green, No. 19 Hoover.

The calendar is about to hit February and that means the high school girls basketball season is hitting the final stretch of regular-season games as teams hope to be playing their best ball heading into playoffs. And playoffs mean anything can happen, including a shuffling in the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings as winners advance and others head home.

No. 1 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) kept rolling last week in a blowout win as USC commit Juju Watkins set the school record with 45 points. The Trailblazers look poised to make a run at a second straight CIF Open Division title with a number of contributors surrounding Watkins, including MacKenly Randolph, Izela Arenas, Crystal Wang and freshman Emilia Krstevski.

Standing in their way hopes to be No. 5 La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla, Calif.) or No. 10 Etiwanda (Calif.). The two battled over the weekend in what could be a postseason preview. The Torreys took advantage of foul trouble for Etiwanda point guard Aliyahna Morris and got 24 points from Arizona commit Jada Williams.

Speaking of battles, it's going down in Alabama on Tuesday as No. 13 Hazel Green puts its state record for consecutive wins on the line against No. 19 Hoover. The Trojans set the Yellowhammer State mark with their 87th straight win over the weekend. The two won't meet in the postseason — Hazel Green is 6A while Hoover is 7A — so this is for state bragging rights.
