Baseball Recap: Salem Comes Up Short

Salem extended their losing streak to ten on Monday, dropping their season record down to 1-11 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Ursuline Fighting Irish. The Quakers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Fighting Irish apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2022.

Troy Gibson and Colin Riesen did some serious damage despite the final result: Gibson went a perfect 4-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Riesen went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Van Dyne, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.

As for Ursuline, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games.

On Ursuline's side, Dom Polkovitch tossed a big game, pitching 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Luke Kollar, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in May of 2024. Anthony Triveri was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Salem will venture away from home to challenge Marlington at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Dukes' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Quakers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Ursuline, they will face off against Cardinal Mooney at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Fighting Irish's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cardinals have averaged an impressive 6.9 runs per game this season.
