Rio Mesa is 9-1 against Ventura since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Spartans will venture away from home to take on the Cougars at 3:30 p.m.
Rio Mesa fell victim to Camarillo and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against the Scorpions, falling 16-0. The Spartans haven't had much luck with the Scorpions recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Rio Mesa saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alyssa Diaz, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one double.
Meanwhile, Ventura hadn't done well against Rio Mesa recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Cougars walked away with a 4-1 win over the Spartans. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cougars.
Jessie Sebek made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Makayla Halley, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in February. Brooklynn Bishop was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one run.
Rio Mesa's loss dropped their record down to 14-8. As for Ventura, their victory bumped their record up to 16-5.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Rio Mesa hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Ventura struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.7 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Rio Mesa couldn't quite get it done against Ventura in their previous meeting on Tuesday as they fell 4-1. Can the Spartans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
