Baseball Game Preview: Portage Indians vs. Chesterton Trojans

Portage is 0-10 against Chesterton since April of 2021 but things could change on Friday. The Indians will square off against the Trojans at 6:30 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Portage is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They never let Merrillville get on the board and left with a 5-0 victory. The Indians haven't had any issues with the Pirates recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.

Kaleb Hacker tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Portage is 4-2 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 8-10-2 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kodie Young, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Williams De Gracia, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Chesterton not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since May 2nd (when they won 13-2). They were the clear victors by a 7-0 margin over Washington Township.

Andrew Goveia was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. Nate Redman was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Chesterton's record is now 15-12. As for Portage, the victory got them back to even at 12-12-2.

Portage came up short against Chesterton in their previous matchup two weeks ago, falling 4-1. Can the Indians avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
