Baseball Recap: Independence Sets Scoring Season-High Against North Panola

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Independence). Everything went their way against the North Panola Cougars on Tuesday as the Independence Wildcats made off with a 20-3 victory. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

Miller Owens made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over four innings pitched. He also allowed no hits, which is notable because Independence is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 4-6 otherwise. Owens was also big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Those four hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on DJ Mitchell, who fired off two home runs, four runs, and five RBI while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in RBI. Eli Stepp was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing Three bases. while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Independence kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Independence's victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-7. As for North Panola, their defeat was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-3.

Looking ahead, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Independence Wildcats face off against North Panola Cougars at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for North Panola, they will take on O'Bannon at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. North Panola has given up an average of 13 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
