Football Recap: Drew Tetz and Gerardo Gonzalez Pace Lodi Defense

Lodi extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping them down to 1-8. They lost 38-14 to the Lincoln Trojans. While losing is never fun, the Flames can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 609th, while the Trojans are ranked 263rd).

Although Lodi took the loss, they still got scores from Cooper Mettler and Noah Hufford.

Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 2.6 yards per carry. While one picked up at least six total tackles, Jon Reyes stood above the rest. He picked up two sacks and made six total tackles. The dominant display was nothing new: Lodi has now limited their opponent to fewer and fewer yards per carry in three consecutive matchups.

Lodi didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Drew Tetz and Gerardo Gonzalez. Lodi got some further help from Reyes: he picked up two sacks and made six total tackles.

As for Lincoln, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-5. Considering they have won four contests by more than 21 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

A big part of Lincoln's victory came down to the chemistry between Julian Perez and his top target David Gray. Perez threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns while Gray picked up 101 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Gray also hauled in two receiving touchdowns, which is notable because Lincoln is 2-1 when he posts at least two receiving touchdowns, but 2-4 otherwise.

Looking ahead, Lodi will head out on the road to face off against Edison at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. As for Lincoln, they will welcome St. Mary's at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. The Trojans' defense better be ready for this one: the Rams have averaged an impressive 42 points per game this season.
