Monticello is a perfect 9-0 against Charlottesville since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Mustangs will be playing at home against the Black Knights at 5:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Monticello has three straight victories, Charlottesville has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Tuesday, Monticello needed a bit of extra time to put away Louisa County. They had just enough and edged out the Lions 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Mustangs have posted since May 9, 2024.
Madison Steppe spent all ten innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 19 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Willow Barr was incredible, going 2-for-5 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 15 runs the game before, Charlottesville was a bit more limited in their match on Tuesday. They came up short against Goochland, falling 19-2.
Charlottesville saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ayden Johnson, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple marked the first that Johnson has hit this season.
Monticello's victory bumped their record up to 11-3. As for Charlottesville, their loss dropped their record down to 1-12.
Charlottesville's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Monticello has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Charlottesville, though, as they've been averaging only 2.3 strikeouts. Will Monticello keep running through batters, or will the Black Knights buck the trend?
Monticello took their win against Charlottesville in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 15-2 score. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Black Knights turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
