Basketball Recap: Capistrano Valley Christian Takes a Loss

It was a good run, but Capistrano Valley Christian unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Saturday. They had to suffer through a 79-44 loss at the hands of the Mater Dei Monarchs. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 130th, while the Monarchs are ranked 33rd).

Despite the loss, Capistrano Valley Christian still got an impressive performance from Michael Ahern, who went 6 of 15 en route to 17 points and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Benjamin Makelela, who posted six points and eight rebounds.

Mater Dei's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Demarcus Henry led the charge by putting up 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Davidson, who had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Capistrano Valley Christian's defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-3. As for Mater Dei, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-2.

Capistrano Valley Christian didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 79-45 win against Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas on the 18th. As for Mater Dei, they will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against Gibbs at 12:15 p.m. Mater Dei knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Gibbs likes a good challenge.
