Softball Game Preview: Union County Braves vs. Caldwell County Tigers

Union County hasn't had much luck against Caldwell County recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Union County Braves will be playing at home against the Caldwell County Tigers at 6:00 p.m. Union County will be strutting in after a victory while Caldwell County will be coming in after a loss.

Union County proved they can win big on Monday (they won by eight) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Owensboro Catholic 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Braves have posted since April 12, 2024.

Union County got a great performance from Peyton Jenkins as she pitched 6.1 innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits.

At the plate, Sydney Thomas was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three runs. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Miley Mendoza, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

The home team had won the previous three meetings between Caldwell County and Henderson County, and Henderson County kept the tradition alive. Caldwell County came up short against Henderson County on Thursday, falling 9-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Tigers have suffered since April 19, 2024.

Grace Watson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one home run. The team also got some help courtesy of Harper Holeman, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Union County pushed their record up to 2-0 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games. As for Caldwell County, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Union County skirted past Caldwell County 16-14 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Does Union County have another victory up their sleeve, or will Caldwell County turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
