Baseball Preview: Holmes Bulldogs vs. Newport Wildcats
The Holmes Bulldogs will head out on the road to take on the Newport Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Holmes is no doubt hoping to put an end to a 15-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
On Saturday, Holmes needed a bit of extra time to put away Jackson City. They had just enough and edged the Tigers out 14-12. The high-scoring effort was just what Holmes needed considering they were shutout in their previous game.
Tyler Brashear was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Brashear was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off four doubles, three RBI, and a run while going 4-for-5.
In other batting news, Andre Englemon was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. Another player making a difference was Marshon Rhodes, who scored three runs and stole a base.
Meanwhile, Newport is still looking for their season's first win. They lost 15-0 to Bishop Brossart on Wednesday.
Holmes' win bumped their record up to 9-14. As for Newport, their loss dropped their record down to 0-16.
Holmes took their victory against Newport in their previous meeting two weeks ago by a conclusive 19-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for Holmes since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
