Football Game Preview: Calallen Wildcats vs. El Campo Ricebirds

Two dominant backs in Ricardo Rodrguez and Vladamir Garcia are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Calallen Wildcats will be playing at home against the El Campo Ricebirds at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Calallen has four straight wins, El Campo has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Calallen's defense heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed last Friday. They claimed a resounding 62-0 victory over Hidalgo Early College. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won four matchups by 24 points or more so far this season.

Connor Klostermann went supernova, rushing for 84 yards, while also throwing for 81 yards and a pair of TDs. That's the most rushing yards he has posted since back in August.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Calallen was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 203 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 153 rushing yards in 17 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, El Campo was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 25-21 to La Vernia. While losing is never fun, the Ricebirds can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 446th, while the Bears are ranked 155th).

El Campo's defeat dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Calallen, their win bumped their record up to 8-2.

Calallen took their victory against El Campo in their previous matchup back in November of 2024 by a conclusive 35-14 score. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Ricebirds have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
