Baseball Recap: Mattoon Find Success

Mattoon posted their closest win since April 24th on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 3-1. This was a revenge game for the Greenwave: when they faced off against Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg on Saturday, they had to take a 6-5 loss.

Jackson Horst looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He is becoming a predictor of Mattoon's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is undefeated (and 11-12 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Mattoon saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madden Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double. The Greenwave are 7-2 when Johnson posts two or more runs, but 8-10 otherwise.

Mattoon has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-12 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games. As for Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-4.

Coming up, Mattoon will challenge Shelbyville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Rams will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something the Greenwave surely won't give up without a fight. As for Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, they will square off against Nokomis at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
