Basketball Recap: Hill City Ringnecks vs. Smith Center Redmen
Hill City was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 18th straight loss dating back to last season. They took a blow against the Smith Center Redmen, falling 45-16. The Ringnecks were probably out for revenge after losing 53-22 to them when the teams met back in February of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.
Despite the defeat, Hill City had strong showings from Rylie Minium, who went 6 of 15 on her way to 15 points and seven rebounds, and Allie Keith, who posted no points. That was a full 93.8% of Hill City's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Mary Anne Christian also deserves some recognition as she scored her first point of the season.
Smith Center found their leader in sophomore Kayln Ifland, who went 7 for 11 en route to 16 points and three steals. Another player making a difference was Leah Mckelvey, who had seven points in addition to six boards and five steals.
Hill City's loss dropped their record down to 0-11. As for Smith Center, their win bumped their record up to 5-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hill City will head out to challenge Oakley at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Oakley will roll in looking for their tenth straight victory, something Hill City surely won't give up without a fight. As for Smith Center, they will venture away from home to face off against Phillipsburg at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
