Lynchburg-Clay hasn't had much luck against Fairfield recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Mustangs will face off against the Lions at 5:00 p.m. The last four games Lynchburg-Clay has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
While Lynchburg-Clay didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-13), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They had just enough and edged out Eastern 3-1. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Warriors: they've now won four in a row.
Noel Barnhill spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Lynchburg-Clay saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Caitlyn Collins, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Fairfield entered their tilt with North Adams on Tuesday with five consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with six. They blew past the Green Devils 16-6. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won three contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Kelsie Crowder was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Carly Sanders was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
Fairfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. The last time their OBP was this high was back in May of 2024.
Fairfield's win was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 10.6 runs this season. As for Lynchburg-Clay, their record now sits at 7-1.
Both Lynchburg-Clay and Fairfield just can't seem to miss. The Mustangs have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.4 hits per game. However, it's not like Fairfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.1 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lynchburg-Clay suffered a grim 11-5 defeat to Fairfield when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
