The Whitney Young Dolphins will face off against the Taft Eagles at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Whitney Young comes in on five and Taft on three.
On Saturday, Whitney Young earned a 6-1 victory over Amundsen.
Liani Delgado spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Chiqui Vazquez, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Itzel Jaime, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Taft hadn't done well against Lane Tech recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. The Eagles skirted past the Champions 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Eagles have posted since April 24th.
Taft also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Michaela Power gave up only one earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits.
On the hitting side, Mia Perez was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Whitney Young's victory bumped their record up to 20-10-1. As for Taft, their win bumped their record up to 18-10.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Whitney Young hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .327. However, it's not like Taft struggles in that department as they've averaged .355. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
