Softball Recap: Genoa Area Comets vs. Eastwood Eagles
After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Clay, Genoa Area was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Eastwood Eagles 5-3. This was payback for Genoa Area, who suffered a 5-0 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Kaylin Shields spent all ten innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up 18 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts every time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Emersen Bickel was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-5. Jada Jerew was another key contributor, scoring a run while going 3-for-5.
On Eastwood's side, they also let their pitcher toss all ten innings and she was also dialed-in: Cassi Kieper gave up only one earned (and four unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up 13 Ks.
At the plate, Adyson Bowe made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Karly Wasserman, who scored a run while going 2-for-5.
Genoa Area now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Eastwood, they now have a losing record at 5-6.
Genoa Area will be playing at home against Danbury at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Danbury will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Genoa Area surely won't give up without a fight. As for Eastwood, they will head out on the road to take on Maumee at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Eastwood is looking to tack on another W to their 13-game streak on the road dating back to last season.
