Soldotna begins on top, seeking its ninth consecutive state title.

High school football in Alaska returns next week as the 2020 season gets underway despite uncertainty around when Anchorage-area teams will participate in their first official games.

Defending state champions Soldotna, South Anchorage (Anchorage) and Houston (Big Lake) all begin the 2020 campaign with high expectations as each team is slotted in the Top 10 of the state rankings.

The Stars enter the season riding an 18-game winning winning streak with eight consecutive state championships dating back to the 2012 season. They have a remarkable 77-1 record since 2012.

South Anchorage begins the season at No. 2 in the state after capturing their first state championship since 2014 last season with a 27-13 victory of Service (Anchorage) in the Division I state title game.
