Softball Recap: South Pasadena Beats South Gate for Their Second Straight Victory

While South Pasadena didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the South Gate Rams a 9-0 shutout on Saturday. Considering the Tigers have won five matches by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

South Pasadena got a great performance from Lucia Atencio as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Atencio has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ava Dawson, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high. Andrea Becerra also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

The win made it two in a row for South Pasadena and bumps their season record up to 7-2. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for South Gate, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-9.

South Pasadena will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Monrovia at 3:30 p.m. on April 8. As for South Gate, they will take on South East at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. South East has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.8 runs per game on average), something South Gate will no doubt try to take advantage of.
