Softball Recap: Hammond Morton Drops Highest Score of Season Against Merrillville

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Hammond Morton). They put the hurt on the Merrillville Pirates with a sharp 24-10 win on Monday. The victory continues a trend for the Governors in their matchups with the Pirates: they've now won seven in a row.

Ei'Lani Herrera made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and nine unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one home run, two stolen bases, and five RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Analiya Feliciano was incredible, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with six stolen bases, six runs, and two RBI. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last six games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Asia Jackson, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three stolen bases and four runs.

Hammond Morton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .654. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Hammond Morton pushed their record up to 8-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 13.4 runs. As for Merrillville, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-17.

Looking ahead, Hammond Morton will be playing in front of their home fans against Griffith at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Merrillville, they will head out on the road to face off against Valparaiso at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
