Baseball Recap: New Bern Comes Up Short

New Bern extended their losing streak to six on Friday, dropping their season record down to 11-12 in the process. They came up short against the Jacksonville Cardinals, falling 15-9. The Bears were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Cardinals earlier this season, when they won 11-1.

As for Jacksonville, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 13-10. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games.

For Jacksonville's part, Vasco Sutton was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched five innings while giving up three earned runs off nine hits. Sutton has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Jacksonville is undefeated when Sutton posts two or more runs, but 7-10 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ryan Yates, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Jacksonville: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 7-10 otherwise.

As of now, neither New Bern nor the Cardinals have any future games scheduled.
