High school football: No. 2 Bishop Gorman vs. No. 13 Corona Centennial headlines Top 10 Games of the Week

Eight out-of-state games included this week, led by two MaxPreps Top 25 matchups.

For the second straight week, No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) is spotlighted in our Game of the Week as the Gaels host No. 13 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) on Friday. Last week, Gorman beat No. 6 Central (Miami) 39-35 in a thriller that featured four lead changes in the final 14 minutes. Elija Lofton scored the game-winning touchdown with 24 seconds left.

Corona Centennial also had to score in the final minute to pull out a win last week. Trailing 43-42, Husan Longstreet connected with Jason Harris Jr. for a 19-yard touchdown with seven seconds left to secure a 50-43 win against Punahou (Honolulu).

This will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2014 when Tate Martell led the Gaels to a 43-42 win.

The only other MaxPreps Top 25 matchup features a pair of 2-0 teams as No. 7 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) hosts No. 19 Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.). Chaminade-Madonna has outscored its first two opponents 76-18 while Bergen Catholic is winning by an average margin of 24.5 points per game.

The Gaels conclude their out-of-state schedule and look to add one more statement win to their resume. They have wins over No. 22 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah), Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) and No. 6 Miami Central. The Huskies have bounced back with two straight wins after a 28-14 loss against No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana). This will be the first time Corona Centennial is playing a game outside of California.

Both schools have won state titles in each of the last two seasons and have finished ranked in the MaxPreps Top 25. The Lions have gone 27-2 during that span. The Crusaders are 25-1 since 2021. Chaminade-Madonna started the season with an impressive 35-14 win over St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) and answered that with a 41-4 victory last week at Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale). Bergen Catholic beat Red Bank Catholic (Red Bank) 24-6 to open the season and rolled past Iona Prep (New Rochelle, N.Y.) 38-7 last week.

The Lancers were one of four new teams to join the MaxPreps Top 25 this week and face a big road test against one of the best teams in Arizona. The Wolves have outscored their first two opponents 105-13. An impressive showing on Friday could get the Grand Canyon State its second team in the MaxPreps Top 25, joining No. 21 Liberty (Peoria). The Lancers have three quality wins so far this season against Serra (Gardena), De La Salle (Concord) and Eastside Catholic (Sammamish, Wash.).

Saturday, 7 p.m.

The Monarchs improved to 14-0 against out-of-state opponents since 2017 last week with a 62-0 win over Creekside (Fairburn, Ga.). Kahuku is the top-rated team from Hawaii and faces Mater Dei and No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) in consecutive weeks, hosting the Braves next Saturday.

IMG's game at Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) was canceled because of Hurricane Idalia. The Ascenders already own two quality wins and look to add a third on Friday. They snapped Lipscomb Academy's (Nashville, Tenn.) 21-game win streak to open the season and answered that with a 17-14 win over No. 12 St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia). The Giants have outscored their first three opponents 153-42 and started the season with an impressive 49-28 win over Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati).

The Panthers put together one of the all-time toughest schedules and head to Southern California looking for their first win of the season. Bosco is the third top 10 opponent they have have faced already. Last year's MaxPreps National Champs have won all three games by double-digits. Sanchez enters Friday's showdown with 840 yards through the air and seven touchdowns while completing 78.5 percent of his passes.

South Oak Cliff bounced back after a 34-13 loss against No. 8 Duncanville with a 42-21 win over Lancaster. The Eagles were idle last week after a season-opening 39-7 win over Allen. DeSoto won last year's meeting 42-23.

Both teams responded with wins last week after dropping their season opener. St. Joe's Prep cruised to a 42-0 win over St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) after a 17-14 loss against No. 4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.). The defense held the Marauders to 28 total yards of offense. Lakeland beat Largo 28-0 after a 48-34 loss against Norland (Miami).

The Packers have won all three games by at least 20 points this season. Carr, a 2024 Georgia commit, has been one of the most electric receivers in the country hauling in 23 receptions for 376 yards and eight touchdowns. The Trojans have outscored their first three opponents 136-45.

The eighth out-of-state matchup included in our top 10 games is a Maryland vs. Virginia showdown. The Stags have dominated through their first two games outscoring the opposition 83-14. The Eagles put their 17-game winning streak on the line and have one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country. Evans was named the 2022 MaxPreps Virginia Player of the Year and has accounted for 4,849 yards of total offense (3,939 passing, 910 rushing) and 78 total touchdowns during the win streak.
