Football Recap: La Serna Starts Season with Loss on the Road

La Serna had to hit the road for their first game and it wasn't the result they were hoping for. They fell just short of the Rancho Bernardo Broncos by a score of 15-13 on Friday. The Lancers gained 71 more yards on the day, but it was the Broncos that made the best use of them.

Although La Serna took the loss, they still got scores from Zeb Bontemps and Brennan Meyring.

Even if they lost, La Serna's defense still kept up the pressure with four sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. They received some extra help from Meyring, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Rancho Bernardo found their leader in sophomore Gavin Valencia, who made 17 total tackles. Gaige Weddle didn't just play on offense: he also made six total tackles and defended one pass in addition to snagging an interception which he returned one-yard for a touchdown.

La Serna and Rancho Bernardo should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Lancers (ranked 62nd) will meet Schurr (ranked 406th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Rancho Bernardo will square off against Brawley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (134 vs. 312).
