The Mercy McAuley Wolves are taking a road trip to face off against the Roger Bacon Spartans at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Mercy McAuley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.
Mercy McAuley is headed into Saturday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Wednesday. They fell 7-2 to Seton.
Sophia Ward spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and six unearned) runs on ten hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Mercy McAuley saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kaylee Hartmann, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. Another was Maddie Sucietto, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Roger Bacon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took a 9-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.
Roger Bacon also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Kendra Gee gave up three earned (and five unearned) runs on 12 hits. Those hits marked the first that Gee allowed this season.
On the hitting side, Ally Hughes was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Gabby Ernst also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Roger Bacon's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Mercy McAuley, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mercy McAuley has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Roger Bacon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Mercy McAuley's way against Roger Bacon in their previous matchup back in March of 2023, as Mercy McAuley made off with a 17-4 win. Will the Wolves repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
