Basketball Game Preview: Wakeland Wolverines vs. Newman Smith Trojans

Wakeland hasn't had much luck against Newman Smith recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The two teams will compete for holiday cheer at 7:15 p.m. Newman Smith took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Wakeland, who comes in off a win.

Wakeland took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They walked away with a 47-40 win over Liberty. While the Wolverines didn't have the best season last year (they finished 5-21), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Meanwhile, Newman Smith was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 60-54 heartbreaker at the hands of Seagoville. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1140th, while the Dragons are ranked 402nd).

Newman Smith's defeat dropped their record down to 2-9. As for Wakeland, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-5.

Wakeland came up short against Newman Smith in their previous matchup back in February, falling 63-54. Can Wakeland avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
