Softball Recap: Itawamba Agricultural Falls Short Against Ranked East Union

Itawamba Agricultural faced East Union in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Indians fell just short of the Urchins by a score of 3-2. If the Indians were looking for revenge after losing 4-0 to the Urchins when the teams met back in February of 2016, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Layla Owens spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

Itawamba Agricultural's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 22-6. As for East Union, they pushed their record up to 18-2 with the win, which was their 19th straight on the road dating back to last season.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Itawamba Agricultural will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Northeast Lauderdale at 6:00 p.m. As for East Union, they will welcome Wheeler at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Urchins 2.8, the Eagles 3.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
