Basketball Recap: Sargent Comes Up Short

After flying high against South Park last Friday, Sargent came back down to earth. The Sargent Farmers were outmatched by the Sierra Grande Panthers and fell 79-41. The Farmers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2019.

Sargent's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lucas Garcia, who went 6 for 13 to rack up 16 points in addition to seven boards and four steals. Garcia continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Corbin Castillo, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 13 points.

It was another big night for Jadyn Martinez, who dropped a double-double with 32 points and 13 rebounds for Sierra Grande. The dominant performance gave Martinez a new career-high in boards. Rolando Najera was another key player, dropping a double-double with ten rebounds and ten assists.

Sargent has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 5-10 record this season. As for Sierra Grande, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sargent will square off against Dolores at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Sierra Grande, they will face off against La Veta at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Sierra Grande is facing La Veta at the right time seeing as La Veta is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
