JP Hyde made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs.
Hyde wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gavin Coffey, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Cameron Crawford was another, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Barren County hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in seven consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Taylor County made easy work of Meade County on Saturday and carried off a 7-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Cardinals, who have now won 12 games by six runs or more so far this season.
Like Barren County, Taylor County also got a great game from a two-way player: Grayson Kearney. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over four innings pitched. What's more, Kearney posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
In other pitching news, Isaac Burress looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.
Back at the plate, Layken Lyons was excellent, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April. Baker Cox also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Taylor County is on a roll lately: they've won 15 of their last 18 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Barren County, they pushed their record up to 22-7 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home.
Barren County might still be hurting after the 8-2 defeat they got from Taylor County in their previous matchup back in March. Can the Trojans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
