Baseball Game Preview: Coronado Cougars vs. Foothill Falcons

The Coronado Cougars will square off against the Foothill Falcons at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Coronado is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Nevada's top teams: Las Vegas, who was ranked seventh at the time (Coronado was ranked 25th). The Cougars fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday. The Cougars have struggled against the Wildcats recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.

Dillon Victoravich was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed since back in March.

On the hitting side, Coronado saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Moreno Jackson, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Meanwhile, Foothill hadn't done well against Arbor View recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Falcons were the clear victors by an 11-4 margin over the Aggies. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Falcons considering their two-run performance the contest before.

Matthew Szymarek was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Steven Alvarado was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Foothill is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7-1 record this season. As for Coronado, their loss dropped their record down to 9-17.

Coronado skirted past Foothill 5-3 when the teams last played back in March. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Falcons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
