Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Comes Up Short

St. Mary lost against Nichols back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The St. Mary's Lancers took a blow against the Nichols Vikings, falling 88-51. While losing is never fun, the Lancers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 353rd, while the Vikings are ranked 173rd).

Despite the loss, St. Mary's still got an impressive performance from Will Szablewski, who went 10-for-15 en route to 22 points. What's more, Szablewski also posted a 67% shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Israel Wilson, who posted eight points in addition to five assists and four steals.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Nichols to victory, but perhaps none more so than Tre Paulfrey, who went 10-for-19 to rack up 28 points and four steals. The matchup was Paulfrey's sixth in a row with at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mitchell Masiello, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and ten boards.

St. Mary's has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 8-13 record this season. As for Nichols, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-10.

St. Mary's has already played their next contest, a 73-60 defeat against The Park School of Buffalo on the 13th. As for Nichols, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 78-71 loss against Bishop Timon-St. Jude on the 14th.
