Baseball Game Preview: Portland Christian Royals vs. Catlin Gabel Eagles

The Portland Christian Royals are taking a road trip to face off against the Catlin Gabel Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Portland Christian has three straight victories, Catlin Gabel has eight straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Portland Christian lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Western Christian, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Friday's game. The Royals were the clear victors by a 10-1 margin over the Pioneers on Friday. While the Royals didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Jack Mazurowski was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 12 over 6.2 innings pitched. Those 12 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That triple was his first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Joseph Diesel, who scored a run while going 3-for-4. Pasquale Walker was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.

Portland Christian kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Catlin Gabel came up short against Warrenton on Friday, falling 18-2.

Catlin Gabel's loss dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Portland Christian, their record now sits at 4-1.

Everything went Portland Christian's way against Catlin Gabel in their previous matchup back in March of 2019, as Portland Christian made off with a 9-1 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Royals since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
