High school football rankings: Smyrna finishes No. 1 in final Delaware MaxPreps Top 25

Eagles take top spot after knocking off Dover 52-7 in the Class 3A state championship game.

The high school football season in Delaware came to a close over the weekend. Smyrna was among the winners, beating Dover in the Class 3A state championship game. That victory helped propel the Eagles to the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.

Smyrna (12-1) won its first title since 2017, beating No. 6 Dover 52-7. Delaware MaxPreps Player of the Year Yamir Knight threw, ran and caught four total touchdowns in the win. Knight and Markell Holman each had more than 1,000 yards of total offense this season for the Eagles.

Coming in at No. 2 is Wilmington Friends (Wilmington), which wrapped up an undefeated 15-0 season. The Quakers won their first state championship since 1987 after defeating No. 4 Caravel (Bear) 10-7 in the Class 2A state title game.

Laurel repeated as the Class 1A state champion and finished the season No. 9. The Bulldogs (13-0) will carry a 16-game winning streak into the 2023 season.
